The ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) initiated by water or n-pentanol and catalyzed by trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (HOTf) or methanesulfonic acid (MSA) has been investigated. In contrast with HOTf, MSA was found to afford poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) free of ether linkages even under forcing conditions. The comparison of the two acids substantiates further that activity does not simply correlate with acidity.

Rapid underwater bonding of clear polycarbonate to metal or plastic substrates at temperatures approaching 0 °C was studied. Bonding was achieved within minutes using ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate gel cured using the photoinitiator (dibenzoylferrocene) with a blue-LED light source. The optimum initiator concentration varied from 0.3% to 0.1 wt % for adhesive films 0.5 to 1.2 mm thick, respectively. The polymerisation rate shows a negative temperature dependence making it highly suitable for cold environments.

A method for producing a purified 2-cyanoacrylate is characterized in that distillation is conducted in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor whose boiling point is within ±12° C. of the boiling point of the 2-cyanoacrylate. With this method, polymerization of 2-cyanoacrylate can be continuously prevented in the distillate system during distillation of a crude 2-cyanoacrylate, so that a purified 2-cyanoacrylate can be obtained.
