This review considers the use of poly(alkylcyanoacrylates) (PACAs) as biomedical materials. We first present the different aspects of the polymerization of alkylcyanoacrylate monomers and briefly discuss their applications as skin adhesives, surgical glues and embolitic materials. An extensive review of the developments and applications of PACAs as nanoparticles for the delivery of drugs is then given.

This paper reviews biodegradable synthetic polymers fo- cusing on their potential in tissue engineering applications. The major classes of polymers are briefly discussed with regard to synthesis, properties and biodegradability, and known degradation modes and products are indicated based on studies reported in the literature. A vast major- ity of biodegradable polymers studied belongs to the poly- ester family, which includes polyglycolides and polylactides.

An adhesive composition that contains a preservative is particularly useful as a medical adhesive and can include alkyl cyanoacrylate monomers. The preservative is preferably soluble in the monomer. The compostion may optionally be sterilized by placing a mixture of a polymerizalble adhesive monomer and a preservative in a container, sealing the container and sterilizing the mixture and the container.
